How to hide the X (Twitter) sidebars

What X lets you do without an extension

In other words, X has no way to hide either sidebar while keeping a comfortable timeline.

Narrow the browser window: below a certain width, X shrinks the left navigation to icons and drops the right column. Your timeline shrinks with it.
Dismiss a single card in the right column. Another one takes its place on your next visit.

A user style that hides the columns works until X ships a new layout.
